The staging of Jacques Demy’s 1964 THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG at the Gielgud has been attracting a torrent of abuse. Sunday Times critic Christopher Hart remarked,

I’ve never seen Demy’s original, but to those who have, this hopeless stage version may seem even worse than it did to me. At a time when the arts world is squealing like a stuck pig about cuts, this pretentious and overhyped embarrassment offers a good argument for cutting the arts budget a lot more.
