Newly added to The Omnivore:
22 BRITANNIA ROAD by Amanda Hodgkinson
Hodgkinson’s account of these crumbling relationships has the air of psychological truth. The novel’s twin timeframe is handled adeptly, while the central twist is delivered with aplomb … The tone is at times disappointingly uneven. There is some sparky phrase-making: a thin man makes love to a fat woman “like a rolling pin pressing a pastry”. But the passages that push the plot forward often feel dutiful, while more literary elements feel contrived.
